Lenoir County is a county located in North Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 59648 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 56826, It is the 46th largest in terms of population. It is spread over 402.09 mi˛ (1041.41 square kilometre), of which, 399.85 square miles (1035.61 square kilometre ) of it is land and 2.24 square miles (5.8 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 32nd smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 59648 people in the county, organized into 23862 households, and 16182 families residing in the county. The population density was 149.2 people per square mile (57.61/km˛), giving it the 35th most densely populated county among the North Carolina. There were 27184 housing units at an average density of 68 per square mile (26.25/km˛). The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 2.96 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 118 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 56826, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 32767 White, 23261 Black or African American, 143 American Indian, 252 Asian, 38 Native Hawaiian, and 365 from two or more races.
