In July 2008, its estimated population was 35185, It is the 25th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 606.35 square miles (1570.44 sq km), of which, 591.93 square miles (1533.09 sq km) of it is land and 14.42 square miles (37.35 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 35th largest by total area among Mississippi's county.

For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.5 males.
