In July 2008, its estimated population was 35185, It is the 25th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 606.35 square miles (1570.44 sq km), of which, 591.93 square miles (1533.09 sq km) of it is land and 14.42 square miles (37.35 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 35th largest by total area among Mississippi's county.

In the county Population was distributed with 29.7% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.5 males.
