Leelanau County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 21119. The July 2008 population estimate is 21783, giving it the 21st smallest population among Michigan's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2532.38 miē (6558.83 kmē), of which, 348.47 square miles (902.53 kmē) of it is land and 2183.91 square miles (5656.3 kmē) of it is water, it is the seventh largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 21119 residents, 8436 households, and 6216 families in the county. The population density was 60.6 people per square mile (23.4/kmē), it is the 41st most populated county in terms of population density. There were 13297 housing units at an average density of 38.2 per square mile (14.75/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.89. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 21783, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 20462 White, 99 Black or African American, 897 American Indian, 99 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 221 from two or more races.
