Lee County is one of the 99 county of Iowa, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 38052 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 35408, It is 20th most populous county in Iowa. The county comprises an area of 538.77 mi˛ (1395.41 sq km), of which, 517.39 square miles (1340.03 sq km) of it is land and 21.37 square miles (55.35 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 63rd largest by total area among Iowa's county. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38052 people in the county, organized into 15161 households, and 10248 families residing in the county. The population density was 73.5 people per square mile (28.38/km˛), it is Iowa's 14th most densely populated county. There were 16612 housing units at an average density of 32.1 per square mile (12.39/km˛). The average household size was 2.41 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103.7 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 35408, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 33420 White, 1145 Black or African American, 110 American Indian, 212 Asian, 21 Native Hawaiian, and 500 from two or more races.
