Lawrence County, Tennessee is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 39926 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 40954, It is the 36th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 617.91 sq mi (1600.38 sq km), of which, 617.17 square miles (1598.46 sq km) of it is land and 0.74 square miles (1.92 sq km) of it is water, giving it the ninth largest by total area among Tennessee's county.

In the county Age distribution was 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 40954, The racial makeup of the county was 39677 White, 690 Black or African American, 141 American Indian, 110 Asian, 11 Native Hawaiian, and 325 from two or more races.
