Lawrence County is a county located in the United States of South Dakota. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 21802 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 23524, It is eighth most populous county in South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 800.31 mi˛ (2072.79 square kilometre), of which, 800.04 square miles (2072.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 42nd largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 21802 residents, 8881 households, and 5560 families in the county. The population density was 27.3 people per square mile (10.54/km˛), it would be the ninth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 10427 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5.02/km˛). The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.89. The population's age distribution was 23.1% under the age of 18, 13.7% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 23524, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.63% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 2.51% American Indian, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.1% from two or more races.
