Lawrence County is a county located in the United States of South Dakota. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 21802 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 23524, It is eighth most populous county in South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 800.31 mi˛ (2072.79 square kilometre), of which, 800.04 square miles (2072.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 42nd largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 23524, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.63% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 2.51% American Indian, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.1% from two or more races.
