Lawrence County, Kentucky is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 15569. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 16443, making it the 71st most populous county in Kentucky. It is spread over 420.12 sq mi (1088.11 sq km), of which, 418.78 square miles (1084.64 sq km ) of it is land and 1.35 square miles (3.5 sq km) of it is water, it is the 29th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15569 people in the county, organized into 5954 households, and 4478 families residing in the county. The population density was 37.2 people per square mile (14.36/kmē), giving it the 27th least densely populated county among the Kentucky. There were 7040 housing units at an average density of 16.8 per square mile (6.49/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.59 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 16443, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 16234 White, 52 Black or African American, 45 American Indian, 13 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 97 from two or more races.
