The county extends throughout a territory of 373.94 square miles (968.5 square kilometre ), of which, 371.98 square miles (963.42 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.96 square miles (5.08 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 21st smallest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 113.9 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 16681, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15051 White, 1453 Black or African American, 26 American Indian, 35 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 116 from two or more races.
