Lawrence County, Arkansas is a county located in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Lawrence County is home to 17774 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 16861, giving it the 46th largest population among Arkansas's county. The county encompasses an area of 592.34 square miles (1534.15 square kilometre ), of which, 586.57 square miles (1519.21 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.78 square miles (14.97 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 12th smallest by size in Arkansas.

The population density was 30.3 people per square mile (11.7/kmē), giving it the 35th most densely populated county among the Arkansas. There were 8085 housing units at an average density of 13.8 per square mile (5.33/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92. In the county Age distribution was 24% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 16861, The racial makeup of the county was 16381 White, 168 Black or African American, 109 American Indian, 12 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 189 from two or more races.
