Lawrence County is a one of the county from Alabama's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 34803. Its population was estimated at 34166 in July 2008, It is Alabama's 35th most populous county. The county extends throughout a territory of 718.07 mi˛ (1859.79 square kilometre ), of which, 693.38 square miles (1795.85 square kilometre) of it is land and 24.68 square miles (63.92 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 32nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 34803 residents, 13538 households, and 10197 families in the county. The population density was 50.2 people per square mile (19.38/km˛), it is Alabama's 31st most densely populated county. There were 15009 housing units at an average density of 21.6 per square mile (8.34/km˛). The average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 34166, The racial makeup of the county was 78.72% White, 12.31% Black or African American, 5.21% American Indian, 0.2% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 3.52% from two or more races.
