It is spread over 443.74 mi˛ (1149.28 sq km), of which, 435.67 square miles (1128.38 sq km ) of it is land and 8.07 square miles (20.9 sq km) of it is water, it is the 24th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 57586, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 56048 White, 498 Black or African American, 205 American Indian, 297 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 533 from two or more races.
