Laurel City is one of the city of Jones County, Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 18393. The July 2008 population estimate is 18693, making it the 20th most populous in Mississippi. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.76 sq mi (40.82 square kilometre), of which, 15.43 square miles (39.96 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.33 square miles (0.85 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 33rd largest by total area among Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18393 people in the city, organized into 6925 households, and 4540 families living in the city. The population density was 1192.3 people per square mile (460.35/kmē), making it the 56th most densely populated city in Mississippi. There were 7804 housing units at an average density of 505.8 per square mile (195.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 people, and the average family size was 3.21 people. The population's age distribution was 27.9% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.5 males. The median age was 34.7 years, the median age of male residents at 31 and the median age of female residents at 37.8. The racial makeup of the city was 7474 White, 10130 Black or African American, 21 American Indian, 60 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, 124 from two or more races and 583 Ohter races.
