Lauderdale County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 78161 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 78180, giving it the ninth largest population among Mississippi's county. The county spans an area of 715.28 mi˛ (1852.57 sq km), of which, 703.51 square miles (1822.08 sq km) of it is land and 11.77 square miles (30.48 sq km) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 78161 people, 29990 households, and 20569 families residing in the county. The population density was 111.1 people per square mile (42.9/km˛), it is the ninth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 33418 housing units at an average density of 47.5 per square mile (18.34/km˛). The average household size was 2.49 persons, and the average family size was 3.06 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.6% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 78180, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 56.93% White, 41.41% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.58% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.81% from two or more races.
