Its population was estimated at 34574 in July 2008, It is California's 12th least populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4720.37 square miles (12225.7 square kilometre), of which, 4557.27 square miles (11803.28 square kilometre) of it is land and 163.1 square miles (422.43 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the ninth largest by total area in California.
