Las Animas County is one of the 63 county of Colorado, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The population of the county was 15207 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 16048, It is the 29th most populous county in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county spans an area of 4775.42 mi˛ (12368.28 square kilometre), of which, 4772.63 square miles (12361.05 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.79 square miles (7.23 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15207 people in the county, organized into 6173 households, and 4095 families residing in the county. The population density was 3.2 people per square mile (1.24/km˛), it would be the 15th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Colorado. There were 7629 housing units at an average density of 1.6 per square mile (0.62/km˛). The average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 16048, The racial makeup of the county was 14876 White, 246 Black or African American, 507 American Indian, 110 Asian, 34 Native Hawaiian, and 275 from two or more races.
