Lamar County, Mississippi is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. It is home to over 39070 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 49121, giving it the 14th largest population among Mississippi's county. The county comprises an area of 500.49 mi˛ (1296.26 sq km), of which, 497.07 square miles (1287.41 sq km) of it is land and 3.42 square miles (8.86 sq km) of it is water, making it Mississippi's 52nd largest county by total area.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 28% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 49121, The racial makeup of the county was 82.09% White, 16.28% Black or African American, 0.16% American Indian, 0.75% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.72% from two or more races.
