Lake County is a county located in the United States of Indiana. The county has a population of 484564 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 493800, It is the second largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 626.34 sq mi (1622.21 square kilometre), of which, 496.98 square miles (1287.17 square kilometre) of it is land and 129.36 square miles (335.04 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the second largest by total area in Indiana. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Indiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 484564 people, 181633 households, and 127036 families living in the county. The population density was 975 people per square mile (376.45/kmē), making it the second most densely populated county in Indiana. There were 194992 housing units at an average density of 392.4 per square mile (151.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.64 people, and the average family size was 3.19 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 13% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.4 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 493800, The racial makeup of the county was 71.09% White, 26.06% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian, 1.17% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 1.2% from two or more races.
