Lake County is a county located in Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. It is home to over 644356 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 712453, It is Illinois's third most populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1367.95 mi˛ (3542.97 square kilometre), of which, 447.56 square miles (1159.18 square kilometre) of it is land and 920.39 square miles (2383.8 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among Illinois's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 644356 people, 216297 households, and 163978 families residing in the county. The population density was 1439.7 people per square mile (555.87/km˛), it is the third most populated county in terms of population density. There were 225919 housing units at an average density of 504.8 per square mile (194.9/km˛). The average household size was 2.88 persons, and the average family size was 3.33 persons. The population's age distribution was 29.4% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 712453, The racial makeup of the county was 85.32% White, 6.92% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 5.82% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.46% from two or more races.
