Lafayette Parish is a parish located in Louisiana, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, parish has a population of 190503 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the parish is 206976, It is the sixth most populous parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The parish spans an area of 270.29 mi˛ (700.05 square kilometre), of which, 269.83 square miles (698.86 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.46 square miles (1.19 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Louisiana's third smallest parish by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 190503 people in the parish, organized into 72372 households, and 48839 families living in the parish. The population density was 706 people per square mile (272.59/km˛), it is the fourth most populated parish in terms of population density. There were 78122 housing units at an average density of 289.5 per square mile (111.78/km˛). The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.12. In the parish Population was distributed with 27.4% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 206976, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 148506 White, 52830 Black or African American, 665 American Indian, 2867 Asian, 67 Native Hawaiian, and 2041 from two or more races.
