Lafayette County is one of the 67 county of Florida, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Lafayette County had an official population of 7022 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 8013, making it the second least populous county in Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 547.92 square miles (1419.11 sq km), of which, 542.84 square miles (1405.95 sq km) of it is land and 5.08 square miles (13.16 sq km) of it is water, making it the eighth smallest by size in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7022 people, 2142 households, and 1591 families residing in the county. The population density was 12.9 people per square mile (4.98/kmē), giving it the second least densely populated county among the Florida. There were 2660 housing units at an average density of 4.9 per square mile (1.89/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.66 persons, and the average family size was 3.06 persons. In the Lafayette County, 21.7% of the population was under the age of 18, 10.7% were 18 to 24, 34% were 25 to 44, 21.3% were 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 148.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 157.8 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 8013, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 6482 White, 1366 Black or African American, 60 American Indian, 21 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 83 from two or more races.
