As of July 2008, the estimated population was 21871, It is the 26th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county extends throughout a territory of 653.3 square miles (1692.04 kmē ), of which, 648.82 square miles (1680.44 kmē) of it is land and 4.48 square miles (11.6 kmē) of it is water, making it the 31st smallest by size in Kansas.
