La Vergne City is one of the city of Rutherford County, Tennessee, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18687 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 30034, making it Tennessee's 27th largest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.1 square miles (65.01 square kilometre), of which, 24.8 square miles (64.23 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 20th largest by total area among Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18687 people in the city, organized into 5369 households, and 3232 families living in the city. The population density was 753.7 people per square mile (291.01/kmē), making it the 123rd most densely populated city in Tennessee. There were 6994 housing units at an average density of 282 per square mile (108.88/kmē). The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.17. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 31.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 38.9% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
