Koochiching County, Minnesota is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 14355 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 13251, It is the 27th least populous county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The county has a total area of 3154.32 sq mi (8169.65 sq km), of which, 3102.36 square miles (8035.08 sq km) of it is land and 51.96 square miles (134.58 sq km) of it is water, makes it the third largest by total area in Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14355 residents, 6040 households, and 3962 families in the county. The population density was 4.6 people per square mile (1.78/kmē), it is Minnesota's third least densely populated county. There were 7719 housing units at an average density of 2.5 per square mile (0.97/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.9% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 13251, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 12634 White, 68 Black or African American, 347 American Indian, 27 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 166 from two or more races.
