Knox County is one of the 16 county of Maine, located towards the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Knox County is home to 39618 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 40686, making it Maine's tenth largest county. The county has a total area of 1142.1 sq mi (2958.03 sq km), of which, 365.67 square miles (947.08 sq km) of it is land and 776.43 square miles (2010.94 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 11th largest by total area among Maine's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 39618 people in the county, organized into 16608 households, and 10728 families living in the county. The population density was 108.3 people per square mile (41.81/kmē), it is the sixth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 21612 housing units at an average density of 59.1 per square mile (22.82/kmē). The average household size was 2.31 people, and the average family size was 2.83 people. In the county Age distribution was 22.4% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.5 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 40686, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 39852 White, 167 Black or African American, 116 American Indian, 196 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 349 from two or more races.
