Knox County is a county located in Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 55836 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 51857 in July 2008, It is the 29th most populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county has a total area of 719.7 mi˛ (1864.01 sq km), of which, 716.28 square miles (1855.16 sq km) of it is land and 3.42 square miles (8.86 sq km) of it is water, making it Illinois's 23rd largest county by total area.

The population density was 78 people per square mile (30.12/km˛), giving it the 31st most densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 23717 housing units at an average density of 33.1 per square mile (12.78/km˛). The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.87. Age range in the county was well distributed with 22% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 51857, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 46718 White, 3746 Black or African American, 128 American Indian, 475 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 782 from two or more races.
