Kirksville City is one of the city of Adair County, Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 16988. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 17368, It is 40th most populous in Missouri. Its area is just over 10.5 square miles (27.19 kmē), of which, 10.46 square miles (27.09 kmē) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 kmē) of it is water, it is the 47th largest by area in the U.S. state of Missouri.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16988 people, 6583 households, and 2973 families living in the city. The population density was 1624 people per square mile (627.03/kmē), giving it the 142nd most densely populated city among the Missouri.
