Ketchikan City is one of the city of Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. Ketchikan City had an official population of 7922 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 7280, giving it the sixth largest population among Alaska. It covers total area of 4.14 square miles (10.72 square kilometre), of which, 3.37 square miles (8.73 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.77 square miles (1.99 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 55th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Alaska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7922 people in the city, organized into 3197 households, and 1956 families residing in the city. The population density was 2348.6 people per square mile (906.8/kmē), it is most densely populated city in Alaska. There were 3645 housing units at an average density of 1081.6 per square mile (417.61/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103 males. The median age is 35.8 years, the median age of male residents at 35.9 and the median age of female residents at 35.7. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 5340 White, 59 Black or African American, 1394 American Indian, 543 Asian, 16 Native Hawaiian, 529 from two or more races and 41 Ohter races.
