Kershaw County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 52647 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 58901, It is the 23rd most populous county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 740.25 mi˛ (1917.24 square kilometre), of which, 726.26 square miles (1881 square kilometre) of it is land and 14 square miles (36.26 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 17th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Carolina.

The population density was 72.5 people per square mile (27.99/km˛), it is South Carolina's 24th most densely populated county. There were 22683 housing units at an average density of 31.2 per square mile (12.05/km˛). The average household size was 2.58 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the county Age distribution was 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.2 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 58901, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 72.47% White, 25.77% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.93% from two or more races.
