Kern County is one of the 58 county of California, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. The county has a population of 661645 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 800458, It is 12th most populous county in California. It is spread over 8161.42 sq mi (21137.98 sq km), of which, 8140.96 square miles (21084.99 sq km ) of it is land and 20.46 square miles (52.99 sq km) of it is water, it is the third largest by area in the U.S. state of California.

The population density was 81.3 people per square mile (31.39/kmē), it would be the 32nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of California. There were 231564 housing units at an average density of 28.4 per square mile (10.97/kmē). The average household size was 3.03 people, and the average family size was 3.5 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 31.9% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.3 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 800458, The racial makeup of the county was 85.41% White, 6.45% Black or African American, 1.8% American Indian, 3.99% Asian, 0.21% Native Hawaiian, and 2.14% from two or more races.
