Its population was estimated at 10697 in July 2008, It is 27th least populous county in Iowa. It has total area of 579.94 mi˛ (1502.04 sq km), of which, 579.19 square miles (1500.1 sq km) of it is land and 0.75 square miles (1.94 sq km) of it is water, it is the 34th largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa.

For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males.
