It covers total area of 871.5 sq mi (2257.17 kmē), of which, 871.06 square miles (2256.04 kmē) of it is land and 0.44 square miles (1.14 kmē) of it is water, it is the 38th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

The population density was 5.2 people per square mile (2.01/kmē), it would be the 30th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 1657 housing units at an average density of 1.9 per square mile (0.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.91 persons, and the average family size was 3.35 persons.
