Kearney County is a United States county located in the United States of Nebraska. The population of the county was 6882 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6479, It is the 46th most populous county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The county comprises an area of 516.13 square miles (1336.77 square kilometre), of which, 516.03 square miles (1336.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 19th smallest by size in Nebraska.

The population density was 13.3 people per square mile (5.14/kmē), making it the 37th most densely populated county in Nebraska. There were 2846 housing units at an average density of 5.5 per square mile (2.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 2.98 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 6479, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.75% White, 0.23% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.45% from two or more races.
