Kearney City is a city in the Buffalo County, Nebraska, United States. The population of the city was 27431 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 30417, It is the fifth most populous in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It covers total area of 11.2 sq mi (29.01 square kilometre), of which, 10.98 square miles (28.44 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.22 square miles (0.57 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Nebraska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 27431 residents, 10549 households, and 6163 families in the city.
