Kannapolis City is a city in the Cabarrus and Rowan counties, North Carolina, United States. It is home to over 36910 people (2000 census). Its population was estimated at 42521 in July 2008, giving it the 21st largest population among North Carolina. The city encompasses an area of 30.39 mi˛ (78.71 sq km ), of which, 29.85 square miles (77.31 sq km) of it is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 sq km) of it is water, making it the 16th largest by size in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 36910 people in the city, organized into 14804 households, and 10147 families living in the city. The population density was 1236.5 people per square mile (477.42/km˛), giving it the 126th most densely populated city among the North Carolina. There were 15941 housing units at an average density of 534 per square mile (206.18/km˛). The average household size was 2.46 people, and the average family size was 2.96 people. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 24.2% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 males. The median age was 36 years, the median age of male residents at 34.3 and the median age of female residents at 37.9. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 77.74% White, 16.45% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 0.86% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, 1.16% from two or more races and 3.43% Other races.
