Kalkaska County, Michigan is a county of the United States of Michigan. It is home to over 16571 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17066, making it Michigan's 18th smallest county. It covers total area of 570.76 miē (1478.26 kmē), of which, 561.02 square miles (1453.04 kmē) of it is land and 9.75 square miles (25.25 kmē) of it is water, making it Michigan's 12th smallest county by total area.

The population density was 29.5 people per square mile (11.39/kmē), making its Michigan's 19th least densely populated county. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 98.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 101.1 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 17066, The racial makeup of the county was 16521 White, 106 Black or African American, 154 American Indian, 43 Asian, 7 Native Hawaiian, and 235 from two or more races.
