Its population was estimated at 2014 in July 2008, It is the 14th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Montana. It covers total area of 1870.71 sq mi (4845.12 sq km), of which, 1869.85 square miles (4842.89 sq km) of it is land and 0.86 square miles (2.23 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 36th largest by total area among Montana's county.

The population density was 1.2 people per square mile (0.46/kmē), it is the 12th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Montana. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.9 males.
