Joplin City is a city located in Jasper and Newton counties, Missouri, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 45504. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 49775, making it Missouri's 14th largest. The city spans an area of 31.5 square miles (81.58 square kilometre), of which, 31.42 square miles (81.38 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.08 square miles (0.21 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 12th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 45504 people, 19101 households, and 11511 families living in the city. The population density was 1448.4 people per square mile (559.23/kmē), making its Missouri's 191st most densely populated city. There were 21328 housing units at an average density of 678.8 per square mile (262.09/kmē). The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.89.
