As of July 2008, the estimated population was 51074, It is 29th most populous county in Tennessee. The county spans an area of 314.33 sq mi (814.11 kmē), of which, 273.81 square miles (709.16 kmē) of it is land and 40.51 square miles (104.92 kmē) of it is water, it is the 23rd smallest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.
