Jefferson County is a county in the United States of Ohio. As of 2000 the population was 73894. The July 2008 population estimate is 68526, It is the 36th most populous county in the U.S. state of Ohio. It covers total area of 410.87 sq mi (1064.15 sq km), of which, 409.61 square miles (1060.89 sq km) of it is land and 1.27 square miles (3.29 sq km) of it is water, it is the 17th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Ohio.

As of the census of 2000, there were 73894 people in the county, organized into 30417 households, and 20596 families living in the county. The population density was 180.4 people per square mile (69.65/kmē), it is Ohio's 30th most densely populated county. There were 33291 housing units at an average density of 81.3 per square mile (31.39/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.88 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114.3 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 68526, The racial makeup of the county was 63296 White, 3894 Black or African American, 162 American Indian, 342 Asian, 19 Native Hawaiian, and 813 from two or more races.
