Jefferson County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 111738 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 118046, making it New York's 25th largest county. It is spread over 1857.08 sq mi (4809.82 square kilometre), of which, 1272.2 square miles (3294.98 square kilometre ) of it is land and 584.88 square miles (1514.83 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fourth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 111738 residents, 40068 households, and 28142 families in the county. The population density was 87.8 people per square mile (33.9/kmē), giving it the 41st most densely populated county among the New York. There were 54070 housing units at an average density of 42.5 per square mile (16.41/kmē). The average household size was 2.58 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. The population's age distribution was 26.5% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 118046, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.36% White, 5.46% Black or African American, 0.73% American Indian, 1.1% Asian, 0.21% Native Hawaiian, and 2.13% from two or more races.
