The county spans an area of 575.5 mi˛ (1490.54 sq km), of which, 573.01 square miles (1484.09 sq km) of it is land and 2.48 square miles (6.42 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 53rd largest by total area in Nebraska.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 7405, The racial makeup of the county was 98.54% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.59% American Indian, 0.2% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.53% from two or more races.
