Jefferson County is one of the 56 county of Montana, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 10049 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 11255, making it Montana's 15th largest county. The county spans an area of 1658.83 sq mi (4296.35 kmē), of which, 1656.64 square miles (4290.68 kmē) of it is land and 2.19 square miles (5.67 kmē) of it is water, making it Montana's 14th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10049 people, 3747 households, and 2846 families living in the county. The population density was 6.1 people per square mile (2.36/kmē), it would be the 11th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Montana. There were 4199 housing units at an average density of 2.5 per square mile (0.97/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county Age distribution was 27.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 29.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 99.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 99.6 females. Its population was estimated at 11255 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 96.44% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 1.32% American Indian, 0.39% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.64% from two or more races.
