According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 217679, making it the sixth most populous county in Missouri. The county comprises an area of 664.09 square miles (1719.99 square kilometre), of which, 656.8 square miles (1701.1 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.29 square miles (18.88 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 41st largest by total area among Missouri's county.
