Jefferson County is one of the 82 county of Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 9740 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 8872, making it Mississippi's sixth smallest county. It has total area of 527.19 mi˛ (1365.42 sq km), of which, 519.39 square miles (1345.21 sq km) of it is land and 7.81 square miles (20.23 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 47th largest by total area among Mississippi's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9740 people, 3308 households, and 2339 families living in the county. The population density was 18.8 people per square mile (7.26/km˛), it would be the tenth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 3819 housing units at an average density of 7.4 per square mile (2.86/km˛). The average household size was 2.75 people, and the average family size was 3.36 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 28.8% under the age of 18, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 8872, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13.4% White, 85.96% Black or African American, 0.09% American Indian, 0.16% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.38% from two or more races.
