Jefferson County, Kentucky is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 693604 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 713877, It is the largest county by population in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county extends throughout a territory of 398.58 miē (1032.32 kmē ), of which, 385.09 square miles (997.38 kmē) of it is land and 13.49 square miles (34.94 kmē) of it is water, making it the 35th largest by size in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 693604 people, 287012 households, and 182971 families residing in the county. The population density was 1801.2 people per square mile (695.45/kmē), giving it the most densely populated county among the Kentucky. There were 305835 housing units at an average density of 794.2 per square mile (306.64/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 people, and the average family size was 2.97 people. In the Jefferson County, 24.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 8.9% were 18 to 24, 30.4% were 25 to 44, 22.8% were 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 713877, The racial makeup of the county was 542419 White, 145113 Black or African American, 2474 American Indian, 13371 Asian, 575 Native Hawaiian, and 9925 from two or more races.
