Jefferson County is a one of the county from Indiana's 92 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. It is home to over 31705 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 32820, It is Indiana's 48th most populous county. It is spread over 362.94 square miles (940.01 sq km), of which, 361.37 square miles (935.94 sq km ) of it is land and 1.58 square miles (4.09 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 24th smallest by total area in Indiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 31705 people in the county, organized into 12148 households, and 8435 families living in the county. The population density was 87.7 people per square mile (33.86/kmē), it would be the 45th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Indiana. There were 13386 housing units at an average density of 37 per square mile (14.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.4% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 32820, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.28% White, 1.64% Black or African American, 0.24% American Indian, 0.69% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.14% from two or more races.
