Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 40083, making it Illinois's 34th largest county. Its area is just over 583.71 miē (1511.8 kmē), of which, 570.96 square miles (1478.78 kmē) of it is land and 12.76 square miles (33.05 kmē) of it is water, making it Illinois's 41st largest county by total area.
