Jefferson County is a one of the county from Alabama's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 662047 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 659503, giving it the largest population among Alabama's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1123.8 mi˛ (2910.63 sq km), of which, 1112.61 square miles (2881.65 sq km) of it is land and 11.2 square miles (29.01 sq km) of it is water, giving it the sixth largest by total area among Alabama's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 662047 residents, 263265 households, and 175950 families in the county. The population density was 595 people per square mile (229.73/km˛), it would be the most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Alabama. There were 288162 housing units at an average density of 259 per square mile (100/km˛). The average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. The population's age distribution was 24.8% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 659503, The racial makeup of the county was 371120 White, 271111 Black or African American, 2264 American Indian, 8505 Asian, 424 Native Hawaiian, and 6079 from two or more races.
