The county has a total area of 471.59 mi˛ (1221.41 square kilometre), of which, 465.79 square miles (1206.39 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.8 square miles (15.02 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 21st largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.
