Jackson County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Jackson County had an official population of 2930 in 2000. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2711, It is 17th least populous county in South Dakota. It has total area of 1871.24 mi˛ (4846.49 sq km), of which, 1869.13 square miles (4841.02 sq km) of it is land and 2.12 square miles (5.49 sq km) of it is water, making it the tenth largest by size in South Dakota.

The population density was 1.6 people per square mile (0.62/km˛), it is South Dakota's eighth least densely populated county. In the county the population was spread out, with 36.5% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 101.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 104.8 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 2711, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 1279 White, 1 Black or African American, 1355 American Indian, 0 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 75 from two or more races.
